The LeapFrog Tag Reader has won no less than 28 awards since its launch and still today continues to be praised for its innovative and simple manner in which it teaches children to read so effectively without them even knowing that they are learning!
Who Is It ForThe ‘Tag Reading System’ is intended for children of 4 years to 8 years of age and there is good reason for that. The LeapFrog Tag Reader is based on a largish size pen that is really comfortable and useable for children with larger hands, ie: hand sizes that are developed by 4 years of age, obviously there are hand growth exceptions. For toddlers, LeapFrog have a comparable reading system called the Tag Junior Book Pal which essentially replaces the pen reader with a much more manageable device suitable for the hand sizes and dexterity of smaller children.
How It WorksThe whole learning to read technology is built around a reading pen device. The pen has a sensor in the tip that can be used to touch an assortment of places on the pages of Tag books and provide various responses, whether that be reading whole pages, reading words or even simple fun responses from touching different characters and pictures found on the page. The pen itself comes in two different storage capabilities, 32mb and 16mb, although these days the 32mb pen has become standard and certainly the most common and best selling. The essential difference in the different pen storage capabilities is that for your LeapFrog Tag Reading System pen to interact with the different Tag books, you first need to load into the pen that book’s information and intelligence. The 32mb holds a maximum of 10 books and the 16mb pen is capable of holding 5 books. It is necessary to either have a computer or have access to one to make the LeapFrog Tag Reading System work. You will need to connect the pen to the LeapFrog website using the included USB cord and then download the data for whichever book that you have into your pen. This is a free download. Once you have your Tag book and the relevant data downloaded into your pen, you are ready to go. The Tag books look similar to your standard books, but with ‘intelligence’ built into the pages. The pen’s interaction with the pages will produce a number of different reading responses to help your child to learn to read. The pen can be used to read the entire page to your child or if they have already reached the stage of learning partially to read then they can simply touch the individual words that they do not know and the LeapFrog Tag Reading System will read the word to them. The pages of the Tag books also contain a number of pictures and character images and by touching these, the pen will talk to your child in the character’s voice or provide some fun words and sentences, which all go towards making this learning process more fun, more interactive and providing more reading and word learning opportunities.
